Stereotypes in the Performing Arts: An Introduction for Educators and Administrators
Stereotypes: What are they? Before we, as educators and administrators, can help to break down the walls students have built due to socially constructed stereotypes, we must first recognize the stereotypes that are in place. After understanding what those stereotypes are, the goal is to present students with information about and videos of performers who break down these constructs. Students who have role models who are representative of their own backgrounds are more likely to seem themselves in similar situations than those who are only exposed to stereotyped performers. Below are just a few veins of performing arts and some the stereotypes that are associated with those fields. You will notice that the vast majority of the stereotypes indicate specific races, genders, or sexual orientations.
